BLOCK WATCH

HOME

The Casa Loma Community Association is always keeping our mission statement in mind,

"Create a sense of community among all neighbours in Casa Loma as a safe and caring community".

To aid with safety we have joined the communities with a Block Watch program.

The BC Block Watch program is all about;

“Neighbours helping neighbours” to build a safer neighbourhood. When neighbours work together in communities, they can reduce incidents of crime by eliminating opportunities for that crime to occur.”

History of Block Watch https://blockwatch.com/

Block Watch started in BC in 1986 as a crime prevention program focused specifically on preventing and reducing residential break and enters, and thefts from residents.

Block Watch Programs in British Columbia are under the governance of the Block Watch Society of British Columbia, an organization that provides direction, training and materials to each member in the Program. The majority of Block Watch programs operating across the Province are partnered with municipalities and police detachments. The Society has the sole license for the Program in BC.

Top Crime Prevention Tips

The following are some tips available at the Crime Prevention page.

Personal Safety

Thieves will often target individuals who are walking alone and/or distracted. A simple yet effective strategy to avoid being robbed is to maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times. This can also be referred to as situational awareness.

Child Safety (Bullying)

Bullying is when someone intentionally does or says something to hurt another person. This behaviour is often repetitive and deliberate and can happen to both kids and adults. Bullying is wrong and can take many forms.

Senior Safety

It is very unfortunate that many of our seniors fall victim to crime, whether that be random assaults, theft, fraud and online scams and elder abuse (including bullying).

Home and Apartment Safety

Do you keep your doors locked at all times even when you’re home?

Are entrance doors equipped with 1 good quality dead bolts?

Is the strike plate reinforced with 3 screws that pass through the door frame and into the wall stud?

Do not open your door to anyone you don’t know. Speak through the door.

Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone wrongfully obtains and uses your personal information to commit fraud or theft or for other unlawful purposes.

By using your basic personal information such as name, address, social insurance number (SIN), date of birth and mother’s maiden name, identity thieves may gain access to bank accounts, apply for loans and credit cards or engage in criminal activity that ultimately becomes associated to you.

Household Inventory

Keeping a log of your property is a great way to ensure you have all serial numbers documented should your residence or vehicle be broken into. You can find a form to download at the Block Watch Property Log PDF or you can use it as a guide to make your own. By keeping a log and reporting details of stolen property to the police it will increase the chances of having your property returned to you if it’s stolen or goes missing.

Keep a paper record or save it on your computer or mobile device.
